Take a look at the children and young teenagers around your area. Anything look different? Take a closer look at a large group of children playing in a local school yard or in a nearby playground. More and more children and young adults are getting heavier. In fact, obesity among children has tripled over the past three decades.


Approximately 25 percent (or one in four children) are considered overweight according to the most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.


Parents what are we doing to our children?


As a mother of 4 children, step mother of 2 children and grandmother of 5 precious grandchildren I am definitely concerned with the health of my children and grandchildren.


Do you remember your concern about what you ate during pregnancy, whether or not to nurse your infant; which pacifier might be most orthodontically correct while keeping the baby content; when to introduce organic cereals, and baby foods?


Now I see children less than two years of age sitting in front of the TV eating macaroni and cheese, a hot dog and red artificial juice.


I don’t know about you but as a grandmother this is simply unacceptable. We are killing our kids with a painful slow death.


Parents it’s time to wake up and become proactive on behalf of your kids! We all need to make a change whether we like it or not!


If not this is what your child’s future holds;

* Problems with insulin resistance
* High blood pressure
* Dyslipidemia (abnormal fats)
* Premature heart disease
* Diabetes

We can start being proactive by cleaning out our pantry.

Cleaning Your Pantry Of Harm

There are some things we do for our family just because we know it’s the right thing to do. They may not appreciate it; they may even resent us for it. Sometimes they fight us tooth and nail, and the battle hardly seems worth engaging. One of those right things is trying to assure that our family eats a healthy diet. What a challenge that is in today’s culture.


Today we’re going to take a giant leap forward toward our goal of bringing our family food – real food – and not harm. We’re going to clean out the pantry. It’s not difficult with this 3 step process:

  1. If it’s been sitting in there for more than a year and it’s unlikely you’ll use it in the next year, throw it out. I don’t care if it has a shelf life of eternity. Throw it out.
  2. Now check labels for expiration dates. If it’s expired, throw it out, unless you have a compelling reason to keep it.
  3. While checking labels, if it has a list of ingredients you can’t pronounce, then it’s not really food at all. It’s a bundle of man-made chemicals with tremendous potential to bring harm to your family; it’s not good. Throw it out. this is where you need to be battle-hardened, because your children may be very unhappy indeed when you throw out their favorite nonfood food. But your arms are strong for the task, so never feat.

Statistics report that 48% to 72% of Americans report occasional sleep deprivation insomnia. 22% have sleep deprivation insomnia every night or almost every night.


Adolescents ages 11-17, the 2006 sleep in America poll by the National Sleep Foundation found only 20% of adolescents were getting the recommended nine hours of sleep on school nights and 45% slept less than eight hours.


Although most students in the survey knew they were not getting the sleep they needed, 90% of parents polled believed they were.


The inability to sleep at night is challenging enough, but then those who suffer from sleeplessness must grapple with the many resulting daytime symptoms;

  • of stress,
  • not feeling refreshed or rested
  • poor concentration and focus,
  • feeling tired,
  • irritable,
  • dull,
  • apathetic and forgetful,
  • and a reduction in motor skills and coordination.



When students don’t get sufficient rest they are unable to focus, their grades fall, and they become moody and down. If sleep deprivation insomnia becomes chronic, it can lead to mental health problems such as depression, or misuse of alcohol and medications as they search for things to help them sleep.


According to the national highway traffic safety administration drowsiness and fatigue cause more than 100,000 traffic accidents each year; and young drivers are at the wheel in more than half of these crashes.

As You Can See Sleep Deprivation Insomnia Is A Problem!



There are many things which interfere with sleep;

  • the hectic pace of life and the modern world,
  • your worries and stress,
  • the lack of regular exercise,
  • pain,
  • alcohol,
  • tobacco,
  • and caffeine



People with pain often have trouble sleeping and people who have trouble sleeping will develop pain because of sleep deprivation insomnia. Insomnia itself is enough to induce the pain syndrome.


There is a lot of research being done on sleep but we still only understand a small part of it. What is generally agreed upon is that sleep is restorative and important in the development of long term memory.


So the lack of sleep is associated with fatigue and difficulty with cognition. During sleep the brain also recovers from the activities of the day and prepares us for the challenges for the next day. There are repair functions that happen overnight and molecules that will be needed for function in the future for rebuilding.


Good night sleep helps reduce oxidative stress, improve irritability to control your blood sugar and tunes up your immune system.


Many studies have also shown that insomnia is associated with medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and the increase susceptibility to infection. If sleep deprivation insomnia becomes a pattern, it can lead to a weakened immune system and poor health.

Many health care professionals recommend Lunesta, Rozerem, and a new time-release formulation of Ambien (Zolpidem) which have been approved by the FDA for long-term use for insomnia.

I have taken Lunesta 2 nights in a row (3 mg). Regardless of the horrible taste in my mouth, I have been waking up with nightmares throughout the night. Apparently, about 2 hours after I fell asleep, I rose up out of my bed, sat behind the wheel of my car (still wearing my pink nightgown and fuzzy yellow slippers, of course), and promptly drove my car straight into a tree–all while still asleep. This is called “sleep-driving,” and it is one of the possible side effects of a prescription drug I was taking called Rozerem. And the shocking part is that these Rozerem side effects are not unusual!


Ambien(Zolpidem)

Hi everyone. I wanted to post my personal experience with Ambien. I am no longer taking it because of what it did to me. I’ll explain as briefly as possible: I started taking it when I was 17, and I am now nearly 21. From the very beginning, Ambien had a strange effect on me, especially mentally. Throughout the course of taking Ambien, I experienced COUNTLESS “psychotic” episodes while under the influence. In the beginning, I would cut myself while on it. (I now have over fifty self-inflicted scars all over my body.) I would call people crying. I’d go outside in the middle of the night in nothing but my pajamas and walk around the block. Energy drinks have been around for a while now and are raising concerns with Physicians as well as parents. Being a concerned parent I decided to investigate these drinks for myself.



Here Is What I Found;

Energy drinks are marketed as “dietary supplements.” The limit that the food and drug administration requires on the caffeine content of soft drinks (71 milligrams per 12-ounce can) does not apply. The caffeine content of energy drinks varies from 50 to more than 500 milligrams.


How can a soft drink only have 71 milligrams of caffeine per 12-ounce can, and yet an energy drink that is marketed as a “dietary supplement”, have from 50 to more than 500 milligrams of caffeine in it? This does not make any sense to me.


Here Is The Concern;

The caffeine in energy drinks can give a temporary or false feeling of energy for a short period of time as it raises the blood pressure, but then the body goes through a dramatic drop in energy an hour or so later as the caffeine and sugar leave the bloodstream, causing;

  • sluggishness,
  • mood changes,
  • and a burned out feeling.


Not only do energy drinks usually fail to offer a special boost, but their high caffeine and sugar content can cause extreme dehydration, and are considered by medical experts to be dangerous for the young and physically active.



Caffeine will also worsen insulin sensitivity, which is one of the major causes of diabetes and chronic illness. Other studies have shown that caffeine leads to heart problems.


Johns Hopkins scientists who have spent decades researching the effects of caffeine report that a slew of caffeinated energy drinks now on the market should carry prominent labels that note caffeine doses and warn of potential health risks for consumers.


The problem with many of these energy drinks is not what you know is in them but what you don’t know or aren’t familiar with. While one of the most common ingredients in energy drinks is caffeine, this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as problems go.

But What About The Other Common Ingredients In Energy Drinks, The Ones You Probably Never Heard Of?


We are just beginning to learn of the problems associated with some of these ingredients, especially when mixed with other things, such as drugs. To give you an example of what I am talking about. Taurine, which we naturally get from foods, contains vitamin b6. We normally get more than enough Taurine in out diet and the extra amount that we do get from these energy drinks, depending on how much we consume, can become toxic in our systems.



Another popular ingredient in energy drinks is Guarana, which is a very popular ingredient in many energy drinks, is a central nervous system stimulant. What you don’t know is that consuming these drinks and then mixing them with drinks containing ephedrine or diet pills can be very dangerous.

Energy drinks That Are Combined With Alcohol Can Be Dangerous!


The stimulant effects of mixing energy drinks with alcohol can mask how intoxicated you really are and prevent you from realizing how much alcohol you have consumed.



Fatigue is one of the ways the body normally tells someone that they’ve had enough to drink. The stimulant effect can give the person the impression they aren’t impaired. No matter how alert you feel, your blood alcohol concentration is the same as it would be without the energy drink.


Once the stimulant effect wears off, the depressant effects of the alcohol will remain and could cause vomiting in your sleep or respiratory depression.


Both energy drinks and alcohol are very dehydrating (the caffeine in energy drinks is a diuretic). Dehydration can hinder your body’s ability to metabolize alcohol and will increase the toxicity, and therefore the hangover, the next day.

If You Think Your Kid Does Not Drink These Beverages, Think Again.



An 8 billion dollar industry and the alcoholic versions are growing in popularity.


Three cans, the average amount consumed in one day, equals five shots of whiskey and contains the caffeine of 15 sodas. That’s according to the Alabama department of Childrens Affairs.


31% of 12 – 17 years old and 34% of 18 – 24 years old report regular consumption, also according to the department.



A local mom says, “If I saw that [alcoholic energy drink] sitting on my child’s dresser, I probably would not have looked twice to see the alcohol content. “Police are in the same boat and that’s why ABD Board Chief Michael Crowley is working to educate officers and parents about the latest attack on underage drinking. He says, “They’re colorful, they look like energy drinks, but they’re not.”


Energy drinks are on the market, teens have started to pick up the habit of using – and abusing – the beverages, which contain a lot more of the substance than may be good for them.


Everyone knows about the awakening effects of the drug. But do you or your kids know about the potential side effects?


Taking too high a dose can lead to anxiety, headaches, sleeplessness and the jitters. And stopping, once you’ve gotten used to it, can actually cause withdrawal symptoms that can lead to those same headaches, muscle pain, irritability and even temporary depression.


But the real danger comes when the drinks are mixed with alcohol at parties. The combination of a stimulant (caffeine) with a depressant (alcohol) can be a recipe for trouble. Despite their liquid form, the energy drinks can actually lead to dehydration, a danger in places that may already be hot and enclosed.


Health Canada actually has four reported cases of teens either mixing the substances with booze or simply taking too many of them in a row.

Energy drinks are just like a trendy beverage & we can get the evidence of its popularity by entering in any of the store where lots of energy drink cans may be found easily. Young people are fond of it but lots of kids also use them like sodas.
