You work for them….. interesting concept don’t you think.
Servant leadership has become a new business management concept; a method of leadership growth. It is an essential part of being a leader, a true leader.
“True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not to enrich the leader.”
~ John C. Maxwell
What does this really mean?
Well here is the definition of servant leadership;
Servant leadership has all to do with people, relationships, character and doing the right thing. Good management is no longer good enough, you need good leaders. It is about who you are and your ability to inspire people to action, to influence people to be the best they can be. It is a lifelong journey that includes the discovery of one’s self, a desire to serve others and a commitment to lead.
Sadly, so few leaders actually have the courage to lead in this way because it takes work. It means swimming against the current, walking down the road less traveled, having integrity, not being afraid to be different, or unique.
“If leadership serves only the leader, it will fail. Ego satisfaction, financial gain, and status can all be valuable tools for a leader, but if they become the only motivations, they will eventually destroy a leader. Only when service for a common good is the primary purpose are you truly leading.”
~ Sheila Murray Bethel
Unlike leadership approaches with a top-down hierarchical style, servant leadership instead emphasizes collaboration, trust, empathy, and the ethical use of power. At heart, the individual is a servant first, making the conscious decision to lead in order to better serve others, not to increase their own power. The objective is to enhance the growth of individuals in the organization and increase teamwork and personal involvement.
“The measure of a leader is not the number of people who serve the leader, but the number of people served by the leader.”
~ Adapted from a quote by John C. Maxwell.
Servant leadership is ethical, practical, and meaningful. Here are 7 key practices of servant leaders:
- Person Of Character
- Puts People First
- Skilled Communicator
- Compassionate Collaborator
- Has Forsight
- System Thinker
- Leads With Moral Authority
“Servant-leadership is more than a concept, it is a fact. Any great leader, by which I also mean an ethical leader of any group, will see herself or himself as a servant of that group and will act accordingly.”
~ M. Scott Peck
Servant leadership is all about aligning the participant’s best interests and the team’s goals. A servant leader must find creative ways to bring out their talents, abilities, uniqueness and strengths.
Building a work environment that feels like a family is also very important as well because it lifts moral. When people feel they are taken care of, their work production will increase.
“True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not to enrich the leader.”
~ John C. Maxwell
I firmly believe that if we adopt this method of servant leadership that we can make a difference in this world, have more courage, more clarity and a greater sense that this is a worldwide movement. We can create the future we want by helping people get what they want. When we give of ourselves in doing good for others I firmly believe that many blessings will come our way. So why not help someone else become successful by checking our ego at the door.

P.S. “Servant leadership is easy for people with high self-esteem. Such people have no problem giving credit to others and have no problem listening to other people for ideas. They have no problem in building other people up and they don’t feel other people’s success threatens them In any way. . . . Servant leadership builds self-esteem and encourages Individual growth while obtaining the organization’s objectives.”
~ Ken Blanchard
