The Single Best Investment You Can Make In Yourself, Swim Upstream

January 28th, 2010

Rule #10 – Swim Upstream

Swim Upstream

Go the other way. Ignore the conventional wisdom. If everybody else is doing it one way, there’s a good chance you can find your niche by going in exactly the opposite direction.

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does.  That’s what makes you a winner.” Venus Williams

Being able to swim upstream whether it is starting a new business, stopping the dysfunction in your family or standing up for your beliefs takes guts.

Take A Leap!
Come to the edge, He said.
They said: We are afraid.
Come to the edge, He said.
They came.  He pushed them,
And they flew…..

Guillaume Apollinaire

Belief is the starting point of all achievement.  Without a belief in your mission and in yourself,  you can never succeed on a long-term basis.  You may have temporary success, but eventually the supercomputer between your ears will work to sabotage your success.

If You Are Going To Swim Upstream You Must Take Action

We all know people who have lots of dreams and ambitions, but unfortunately none of it is accompanied by any real action.  They talk about what they are going to do when they finally get their last degree or move to the day shift or get enough money together to start their own business or whatever the excuse is this week.

The unfortunate truth is that many people have their wishbone where their backbone should be.  All the “wouldas, couldas and shouldas” in the world will not get a single thing done.

“A lot of people have ideas, but there are few who decided to do something about them now. Not tomorrow.  Not next week.  But today.  The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer.” Nolan Bushell

All the successful people I know have been willing to take a chance – a leap of faith – even though they were afraid.  Sometimes they were terrified, but they knew if they didn’t act, the opportunity would pass them by.  They trusted their intuition and they simply went for it.

“Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?” Jimmy Johnson

Get In The Game, Swim Upstream

You have probably heard the story of the good and faithful man who fell on hard times.  He seemed to encounter one financial disaster after another.  One night in desperation, he prayed, “Dear God, please let me win the lottery!”  At first, he was optimistic that God would grant his wish. However, after not winning for several months, his faith began to falter.  After a year, he became downright bitter.

In anger, he shouted at the heavens, “God, I believed you would help me, yet an entire year has passed without you answering my prayers!”  At that moment, lighting flashed and thunder rolled and a voice bellowed from the heavens, “Give me a break up here!  The least you could do is buy a ticket!”

Have you bought your ticket?  Have you taken a chance on yourself?  And that does not mean you have to quit your job, sell your home and sink your life savings into a new business tomorrow.  But it does mean that you have to start where you are, with what you have and do something.

There is real power in just getting started.  In fact, momentum is one of the strongest forces on the planet.  For instance, a standing locomotive can be held in place by a small block of wood.  However, once that same locomotive gains momentum, it can crash through a solid brick wall – it becomes unstoppable.  You are the same way.  As soon as you get momentum behind your actions, you too will be unstoppable.

Are you unstoppable?

Are you ready to swim upstream?

Are you ready to take action?
